Can you help our Barnard Castle swifts?

This afternoon local nature lover Ian Graystone came into school to give a talk about a very special bird that visits our town from South Africa every year. The bird in question is the swift. Swifts are an endangered species, not unique to Barney but we are one of a dwindling number of towns to still host this bird for three months each year. They fly here from Southern Africa every year to breed at their chosen nest site, but even here their nest sites are disappearing. Ian is trying to redress the balance by supplying and fitting swift free nest boxes and promoting interest for this unique, record breaking bird (ask your children just how fast they can fly!).

Ian has a Facebook group called "Barnard Castle Swifts" where he posts footage from his occupied nest boxes and tells the story of swift nesting behaviours. Anyone is welcome to join this group. If anyone would like to contact Ian about having a swift nest box and helping to support swifts in Barney, he can be contacted via the Facebook group or email him directly at iggyclimbs@live.co.uk.
