Summer Term 2019
Welcome back to our final term in Year 1! We have a busy term ahead of us with lots to fit in as well as making sure everyone is prepared and ready for the move to Year 2.
In Phonics lessons we will be practising reading a range of real and nonsense words in preparation for the Year One Phonics Screening in June. Regular practise with books and high frequency words at home will also be a big help to improve confidence with reading skills.
Our English lessons will focus on SPAG (Spelling, Punctuaiton and Grammar). We will be learning how to add the suffixes ‘ing’, ‘ed’, ‘er’ and ‘est’ to the end of a word. We will also be thinking about when to use question marks and exclamation marks as well as continuing to learn how to join our handwriting.
In Maths lessons we will be practising basic skills including times tables, exploring positions and direction and money as well as focusing on problem solving skills.
The Year 1 topic for this term is ‘Transport’. We have already begun by watching clips from the Disney film Cars. So far the class have produced some fantastic pieces of writing describing Lightning McQueen and retelling the story. We will be moving onto looking at trains and researching George Stephenson.
In Science lessons we will be exploring a range of different materials and describing their properties.
The class will be attending a multi skills festival at Staindrop Academy on Thursday 11th July 2019. This term our PE lessons will be on a Tuesday and Wednesday.
