Summer Term 2019
Our Learning Journey So Far…..
Our topic this term has been ‘Traditional Tales’. We are really enjoying this learning experience so far. We have been learning about different traditional tales. We have looked at Jack and the Beanstalk, The Three Little Pigs and The Three Bears. We feel that the children are enjoying this topic so are planning on looking at other traditional tales such as Little Red Riding Hood, Hansel and Gretel and The Gingerbread man. We will of course look at any stories that the children take an interest in. We are going to further explore this topic in the next few weeks and we look forward to seeing where this might take us!
The children have shown an interest in learning about new life and plants. We will begin to explore life cycles of humans and animals and we will be focusing on growing plants. To help the children experience this in the best environment we will be introducing Forest School to the children. As we very much base our learning on the children’s interests this will be a starting point for the topic however, if the children choose to show an interest in a different topic we will of course go with the child’s interests and will look forward to reporting this to you as the term progresses.
The children talk a lot about where they live and what they do out of school. Therefore, after the half term break we may focus our learning on Barnard Castle and surrounding areas. We will aim to take the children out into the town and be explorers. The children may be interested in visiting The Bowes Museum, Flatts Woods, The Parks, Morrisons and other locations of interest within the town.
We have learnt many new skills over the foundation stage and we are now moving on to preparing to move into year one. To help us prepare the children well for a smooth transition we are now working on the following skills in Literacy and Numeracy.
Reading To read and understand simple sentences. To use phonic knowledge to decode regular words and read them aloud accurately. Read common irregular words, demonstrate understanding when talking to others about what they have read. Writing To use their phonic knowledge to write words in ways which match their spoken words. Write some irregular common words. Write simple sentences that can be read by themselves and others. They can write some high frequency words. They can use key features of narrative in their own writing.
Number Count reliably with numbers from 1 to 20. Place numbers 1-20 in order. Say which number is one more or one less than a given number to 20. Using quantities and objects, add and subtract two single digit numbers and count on or back to find the answer. Solve problems, including doubling, halving and sharing. They solve practical problems that involve combining groups of 2, 5 or 10 or sharing into equal groups. Shape, space and measure Use everyday language to talk about size, weight, capacity, position, distance, time and money to compare quantities and objects and to solve problems. recognise, recreate and describe patterns. Explore characteristics of everyday objects and shapes and use mathematical language to describe them. Children estimate, measure, weigh and compare and order objects and talk about properties, position and time.
